How to Prepare for Your First Consultation With a Private Investigator

Reaching out to a private investigator for the first time can feel unfamiliar. Most people have never done it before. They are often dealing with a difficult or sensitive situation, they are not sure exactly what they need, and they are unsure what to expect from the process.

A good consultation resolves all of that. It gives you clarity on what an investigation can accomplish, what it will cost, and whether it is the right step for your situation. This guide helps you walk into that conversation prepared — so you get the most out of it.

Before You Call: Gather What You Know

The more information you can provide at the start, the more accurately the investigator can assess the situation and give you realistic expectations. Before your consultation, write down the basics of your situation — what you are concerned about, what you know, and what you want to find out.

For surveillance assignments, useful information includes the subject's name, address, vehicle description, typical daily schedule if known, and the specific behavior or activity you need documented.

For locate or skip trace requests, gather the subject's full name, date of birth, last known address, Social Security number if available, vehicle information, and any known associates or relatives.

For background checks or fraud investigations, note the name and any identifying information you have, the nature of your concern, and what specific information would be most useful to your situation.

What to Expect During the Consultation

A professional investigator will ask questions to understand your situation fully before making any recommendations. They should listen more than they talk in the early part of the conversation.

Expect to be asked what you already know, what outcome you are hoping for, what the information will be used for, and whether there are legal proceedings involved or anticipated. These questions are not intrusive — they are necessary to design an investigation that actually serves your needs.

A good investigator will be honest with you about what is achievable and what is not. If your expectation does not align with what investigation can realistically produce, they should tell you that directly rather than take your money and underdeliver.

Questions to Ask Your Investigator

Are you licensed in Illinois? This should be your first question. Licensure is non-negotiable for professional, legally defensible work.

What is your experience with cases like mine? Experience with the specific type of investigation matters — a PI who primarily handles corporate fraud may not be the best fit for an infidelity surveillance case, and vice versa.

What is the pricing structure and what does it include? Get clarity on the hourly rate, any minimums, what is included in the rate, and what — if anything — is billed additionally. A transparent investigator has clear, simple answers.

How will you communicate with me during the assignment? Know how updates are delivered, how frequently, and who your point of contact is throughout.

How is the evidence delivered and in what format? Understand what you will receive at the end of the assignment and whether it is formatted for your intended use — attorney review, court proceedings, insurance claims, or personal use.
