What Is Unmanned Surveillance?

Unmanned surveillance — also called covert camera placement or static surveillance — is the legal, professional deployment of a concealed camera in a location relevant to your investigation. Unlike a live investigator sitting in a vehicle, the camera does the watching. We deploy the camera, it records, and we retrieve and review the footage. There is no exposure risk, no hourly billing for an investigator's seat time, and no concern about a subject recognizing a parked car.

Under Illinois law, video recording in public spaces or in private spaces with owner consent is lawful. Audio recording requires two-party consent (720 ILCS 5/14), so our equipment is configured for video-only capture. Placement is performed by a licensed detective, documented at deployment, and retrieved with a signed chain-of-custody record. The result is footage that holds up in Cook County, DuPage County, and all Illinois courtrooms.

When YES Unmanned

  • Multi-week monitoring windows
  • Locations where a parked investigator would be obvious
  • Budget-constrained matters
  • Workers' comp long-duration documentation
  • Gradual behavior patterns (elder neglect, theft, lifestyle)
  • Subject's schedule is irregular or unpredictable
  • Static locations: front door, loading dock, storage yard

When NO — Use a Live Investigator

  • Mobile subjects — someone who drives multiple locations daily
  • Real-time decisions needed (follow, break off, respond)
  • Cases requiring immediate service of process
  • Very short windows (under 6 hours)
  • Locations where lawful camera placement isn't possible
  • Situations needing witness interviews mid-surveillance
  • High-security premises that inspect for devices

The practical difference: manned surveillance costs $200/hr with a 6-hour minimum, so a one-week watch is ~$8,400. An unmanned deployment recording the same location for 5 days is a $2,000 flat rate, which delivers comparable insight at a fraction of the cost when the location is right. Both services stand up in court; the right one depends on the case.

How We Deploy — Six Steps

Every deployment follows the same sequence, so the evidence chain stays unbroken.

Case Intake & Consultation

We review your objective, timeframe, and location. The initial call is free. If unmanned surveillance isn't the right fit, we'll say so.

Location & Legal Assessment

We evaluate the site for line-of-sight, power options, concealment, and lawful placement under Illinois privacy law. If consent is required, we document it before deployment.

Written Scope & Quote

We confirm the deployment fee, estimated monitoring hours, expected deployment length, and deliverables in writing before any equipment is placed.

Covert Deployment

The licensed investigator places the camera, matches concealment to the environment, confirms recording, and logs the placement with photos and GPS.

Remote Monitoring & Review

Footage is reviewed on a scheduled interval. Events of interest are clipped, tagged, and preserved with original timestamps intact.

Retrieval & Court-Ready Report

We recover the camera, sign the chain-of-custody record, and deliver a chronological, objective final report that is admissible in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, and McHenry County courts.

When Clients Use Unmanned Surveillance

These are real case patterns we handle regularly in Chicagoland.

Workers' Compensation

Weeks of Activity Documentation

A claimant reports total disability. A camera placed on the front walkway of their residence — lawfully, visible from public view — captures weeks of yard work, lifting, and mobility the claim file denies. The footage is delivered to defense counsel for deposition and trial.

Elder Abuse

Caregiver Pattern Over Time

A family suspects neglect or financial exploitation by a private caregiver. With the elder's or guardian's consent, we place equipment in a common area. Over two weeks, a pattern of late arrivals, unattended medication, and missing items becomes evident — documented for APS and probate court.

Commercial Theft

Stockroom Shrinkage Investigation

A retailer suspects internal theft from back-of-house storage. A camera is placed with owner consent to record the loading dock and stockroom. Three weeks of footage identifies the employee and the pattern, and the evidence is turned over with a signed chain-of-custody record for HR and law-enforcement referral.

Process Serving Support

Evasive Defendant's Arrival Pattern

A defendant repeatedly evades service at home. A camera is placed to observe the residence from a lawful vantage, and within a week it reveals a pattern: the defendant arrives between 11 PM and midnight on Sundays. The process server is positioned the next Sunday, and service is completed on the first attempt.

Frequently Asked

Is unmanned surveillance legal in Illinois?
Yes, it is legal when conducted by a licensed private detective, deployed in a public-view location or with owner consent, and configured for video only (no audio). Supreme Investigations operates under IDFPR Agency License #117.001922. All Illinois PI Act and eavesdropping statute requirements are met before deployment.
How long can a single deployment record?
Battery equipment typically runs 5-14 days depending on whether they record in motion-activated or continuous mode. Hardwired deployments can run indefinitely. For longer windows, we schedule battery swaps or rotate equipment without breaking the chain of custody.
Is the footage admissible in court?
Yes. We log deployment with photos, GPS, and timestamp. Retrieval includes a signed chain-of-custody record. Reports are chronological, factual, and formatted for Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, and McHenry County courts. I testify as a fact witness when required.
What if the subject finds the camera?
Cameras are concealed to match the environment so this is rare, but if it happens, any footage captured to that point remains admissible. Placement is lawful and documented — we have nothing to hide about the deployment itself. We respond in accordance with the legal framework under which the camera was placed.
Can I use unmanned surveillance to watch my ex's house?
You can only if the camera is placed on public property with a public-view line of sight, on your own property, or with the documented consent of the property owner. Placement on an ex's private property without consent is not legal and I won't do it. If the case is about custody or harassment, I'll recommend the lawful path that gets you the same outcome.
How much does it cost compared to a live investigator?
A week of live surveillance at $200/hr with a 6-hour minimum is roughly $8,400. An unmanned deployment is a $2,000 flat rate for 5 days of recording, offering equivalent evidence value when the location is suitable. In-vehicle deployments are the same $2,000 flat rate plus vehicle rental at cost, but they give you options where no public vantage exists. For mobile subjects, live surveillance is still required.
Do you monitor in real time?
Yes, on request. Real-time monitoring with live alerts is available and quoted in writing. Most cases use scheduled review — we check footage on a defined cadence, flag events, and report. This is usually more cost-effective unless you need immediate action.
What should I bring to the consultation?
The location address, relevant parties' names, your objective, any deadlines (court dates, depositions), and if you're represented by counsel, your attorney's contact info. If you don't have all of this, bring what you have — we'll scope from there.

Ready to Deploy?

Every consultation is confidential and reviewed by the licensed investigator — never a call center. There is no pressure and no obligation. If unmanned surveillance isn't the right fit, I'll tell you up front.
